Boss calls out employee for clocking out at 4:56 PM when they clocked in at 8:53: 'It's just a regular desk job'

Should your clocking-in and clocking-out times be watched with scrutiny?

Your workplace probably has expectations for you, and that's okay. They pay your bills, after all. So you probably have to do what they say, even if you don't like it. But that doesn't mean that you have to be disrespected in the process. No job is worth that. But that's what this boss was doing in a story shared to the antiwork subreddit, about a boss who was watching his employees way too closely. We all deserve a little bit of grace when it comes to work. We do the best we can, but we're not always going to be perfect. That's the point. We're humans, so we're going to have some amount of human error in everything we do. The best managers know how to celebrate this, not punish it. We don't deserve to be called out for the ways that we're human beings. We should get to languish in them and celebrate them. This includes clocking in a little past our start time and clocking out a little before. As long as you're getting your work done, it's pointless to be pedantic about this type of stuff. It only breeds an environment of distrust. How can you clock into work knowing that you're being watched like a hawk? That doesn't breed a good sense of community. That breeds suspicion, and I can't think of anyone who wants to work in a workplace full of suspicion.

    Boss emailed me about not adhering to the 9-5 schedule. Here is my timecard.

    I notice that you sometimes leave work before 5:00 PM on days that I am in the office. Please remember that our standard office working hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and you are expected to manage these times by carefully clocking in and out to this time schedule. If you are worried about mismanaging your time, you can clock in slightly early and clock out slightly late to secure your 80 hours, as long as you begin work at 9:00 AM and remain at work until 5:00 PM.     I have to clock in and out at work, so there is very clear documentation of my timecard and I was diligent about making sure I'm always at exactly 40 since it's a nonprofit and they told me they do not want to pay overtime. The hours are 9-5 but I didn't realize they literally meant to the minute. I'm not in a role that is customer facing, or in needed shift coverage, it's just a regular desk job. I have no idea why they need to be this strict about the time other than control. It's ridiculous.

    Successful-Medicine9 I love how you are given permission to work a few extra minutes each day lol. How generous! If you are hourly (in the US), then you can count all of the time over 40 as overtime. If you are salaried, this boss is simply asking to clock in at exactly 9 and out at exactly 5.

  • The person in this story found themselves in a difficult situation with their workplace. The way they saw it, they were doing their job as normal. But their boss had a different view of it. They were micromanaging to the worst degree. Micromanaging is bad enough on its own. To be micromanaged to such a degree is pretty crazy.
